Is Prolific legit? What we checked, and what it pays

Prolific is a real, operating academic research platform. We last checked its published terms and payout rules on 2026-08-19, against the provider's own documentation. What is worth knowing before you join is not whether it exists, but what it actually pays: $8.00 – $16.00 on the published figures, with a £5 / $6 equivalent cash-out floor.
"Legit" gets used for two different questions. The first is whether the company is real and pays people at all. The second is whether joining is worth your time. This page answers both, and they have different answers.
We do not operate accounts on the panels we write about, so nothing here is a personal earnings claim. Everything below is taken from Prolific's published documentation and terms, with the date we last opened them shown at the bottom of the page.

| Published pay range | $1.00 – $12.00 per study |

The complaints that are fair
- Study availability is the whole game and it is unpredictable — some days there is nothing.
- The best-paying studies are taken within minutes of posting.
- Rejections for failed attention checks affect your approval rate and can lock you out of studies.
- Not a 'sit down and earn for two hours' platform.
How Prolific compares on the things people complain about
Cash-out floor and payout speed are the two figures behind most "scam" accusations in this category. A panel that makes you reach $50 before paying feels like a scam long before it is one.
| Panel | Cash-out floor | Reported payout speed |
|---|---|---|
| Prolific | £5 / $6 equivalent | Instant to 3 business days after approval |
| Survey Junkie | $5.00 (500 points) | PayPal usually under 24h |
| Swagbucks | $3.00 (300 SB) PayPal / gift card | Gift cards 0 – 24h, PayPal 1 – 10 days |
| Ipsos i-Say | $5.00 (500 points) | 24 – 72 hours |
| Branded Surveys | $5.00 (500 points) | 1 – 3 business days |
| Pinecone Research | $3.00 — one survey | 3 – 5 business days |
Worth knowing
Eligibility beyond the countries named above is decided at signup, so treat the list as the floor rather than the limit.
